On Friday 2 Air Corp helicopters paid a courtesy visit to Wicklow RNLI Lifeboat Station to celebrate the 150th Anniversary of the lifeboat in Wicklow and to mark the last visit to Wicklow by a Alouette III helicopter , as they are due to be retired after over 44 years service with the Air Corp. Just before 3pm both Wicklow lifeboats sailed out into the bay , soon after the familiar sound of an Alouette III '212' and the latest addition to the Air Corp fleet a AW 139 '277'  echoed over Wicklow bay , the Helicopters took up position each side of the ANNIE BLAKER and SHERHINGHAM SHANTYMEN as they proceeded into Wicklow harbour , an Air Corp photographer was onboard the AW139 to record the visit , the sound of the Alouette III reverberated across the bay as she hovered over the ANNIE BLAKER  . The 2 helicopters then broke away and put down on the Castle , watched by a huge crowd , members of the local Coastguard unit cordoned off a large landing area and marshalled the crowd of spectators. Members of Wicklow lifeboat Station greeted the flight crews from 301 Squadron , soon after there was another surprise as the Dublin based Coastguard s61n helicopter 'Mike Echo' made a low pass over the bay and conducted a winch excercise off the Black Castle , the excercise concluded with Mike Echo hover and dip in salute to the Air Corp and Crowd on the Castle , to have 3 helicopters at Wicklow was unreal,  she then broke away to resume the training fight. The Air Corp flight crews joined the lifeboat crew for a photo in front of the Alouette III , one very special guest present on the day was former lifeboat member Bob Byrne , he was at the at the first visit of a Air Corp Alouette III to Wicklow Lifeboat in the early 1970s , when 'Alpha 196' touched down on the Castle near the position the Anchors are now. The Flight crews joined the lifeboat crew for coffee in the station, they were given a tour and shown photos of Air Corp helicopters working with the lifeboat over the years. A presentation of framed photographs of the first visit of a Alouette III were made to the Air Corp Pilots , and many kind words were exchanged. The visit ended as both helicopters took off and made a fly past over the harbour , the visit was enjoyed by many people and as the helicopters headed north and the noise faded it was tinged with some sadness that this is possibly the last time the sound of the Alouette III will be heard over the bay , a helicopter that has served this country so well and deserves to be honoured along with the many crews who flew them and to the Air Corp technicans whose skill and dedication maintained them for over 44 years..
