They are the Cosantoir Bradan (Salmon Defender)and the Bradan Beatha (Salmon of Life). These protection vessels operate within the 12 mile limit, i.e. no more than 12 miles from shore. In an average year these vessels can expect to cover over 11,000 nautical miles in 315 patrol days.The LPV patrols have a dual function, they act as a visible deterrant and they can act directly against unlawful fishing. When they observe breaches of Fisheries Legislation the crew can board vessels and/or confiscate catch and gear. 19/06/08 RED DUCHESS is a regular visitor through the bay on the way to Youghal and other ports with round timber from Scotland. 19/06/08
Friday the 13th.. A Whelk trawler returns to Wicklow to land it's catch , over the last week Irish fishermen have voiced concerns on the rising cost of fuel and the continuing restrictions imposed on the industry in general. The Irish STV ASGARD ll arrives from Dublin . She sailed the next morning. 2 Air Corp Pilatus PC-9 Light Strike Aircraft head South over Wicklow Bay , the aircraft were joined by a Air Corp AW139 helicopter with a camera crew to record the event. The last time l saw Air Corp aircraft escort planes over Wicklow Bay was in 1979 as Fouga jets escorted Pope John Paul during his visit to Ireland. Photo's Courtesy Pat Dover A Air Corp PC-9 escorts World record holding female solo pilot, Polly Vacher over Wicklow Bay north to Weston Executive Airport on the evening of Friday, 30 May 2008 in her Piper Dakota. It was in this aircraft that Polly has twice flown solo around the world in 2001 and 2003. During the course of the 2003 flight she achieved 3 world records:- • First woman to fly solo over the North Pole in a single engine aircraft. • First woman to fly solo in the Antarctica in a single engine aircraft. • First woman to fly solo around the world landing on all seven continents. For this flight, Polly meticulously prepared for two years, undertaking training in Canada, Alaska and the Alps. Between 21 May 2007 and 31 July 2007 she embarked on a flight around Britain. Her aim was to land at all airfields listed in the Jeppesen VFR manual. In total she landed at a record breaking 221 airfields, covered 19,000 nautical miles in 158 flying hours. See www.worldwings.org. At different stages during the course of these flights she carried 96 disabled passengers. The purpose of carrying the disabled passengers is to promote a charity Polly actively supports, Flying Scholarships for the Disabled (FSD). See www.toreachforthesky.org.uk. This charity assists disabled people to obtain a pilots licence thus restoring their confidence and self esteem. This will be the first time Polly will pay a visit to Ireland since embarking on these record breaking flights. Weather permitting, she will arrive Weston 6.30pm approx and will give a presentation at the Conference centre, Weston airport at 8pm on Friday, 30 May on her exhilarating story and epic flights. There is no cover charge; however patrons are requested to make a donation to the charity she supports, Flying Scholarships for the Disabled (FSD). Skiff Racing has a long history at Wicklow , many years ago boats would race out to meet a approaching ship , the first crew to reach the vessel won the right to pilot the vessel into port . Arts Festival A fine painting of Wicklow RNLI Lifeboat by Pat Dover The Wicklow Arts Festival took place between the 7th - 11th May , many events took place over the 5 days , as part of the festival paintings were displayed in shops along the Main Street , there was a French Market in the car park , display of Paintings on the Railings at the Captain Halpin Monument , historical walks and a Viking talk. It was a busy morning at Wicklow harbour as the yachts were lifted back into the water, over the winter the owners had painted and prepared the boats for the Summer. 03/04/08 Wicklow Port The German coaster LEONA at anchor in Wicklow bay SCOT ISLES discharges timber at the Packet pier. Again bad weather disrupted the whelk fleet going to sea 30/04/08 Over the last week Strong winds have lashed the Wicklow Coast , It's not the normal weather we expect for this time of the year !
