Along the river at Churchbanks. 21/12/10 ANNIE return's The relief fleet RNLI Lifeboat LORD SALTOUN is launched and moor up river prior to ANNIE's return. RNLI Lifeboat ANNIE BLAKER returns after a major overhaul in the UK , the lifeboat has been on station at Wicklow since 1989. No.: 874 / Hamburg - Germany 09/12/10 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ARKLOW RAIDER aground off Drogheda The ARKLOW RAIDER ran aground as it was leaving Drogheda on the evening of Wednesday 16th November in gale-force winds.The ship with a cargo of cement was bound for Swansea. Island Shippings tug HUSKY was involved in the operation to refloat the ship and thanks to Skipper Nick Keogh for the use of the pictures.

HMS CHATHAM passes close to Wicklow harbour after a courtesy visit to Dublin port.
CHATHAM stopped off the Glen Strand for a short time before moving away at speed , the frigate can do over 30knots.

The research vessel CORYETES heads north through Wicklow Bay on a dull friday afternoon, the OCEANIC had only went to anchor in the bay.

The Maltese registered VALENTIN PIKUL dischages timber from Riga at the Packet pier.Built in 1994 by the Volgograd Shipyard as one of their 'Project 16920' ships. She is the second of this class to visit the port. 14/10/10

A pod of bottlenose dolphins arrived off the Harbour entrance at lunchtime on Wednesday , they attracted a large crowd of spectators , l took this shot from the East pier before they left the area heading South. For more info visit the IWDG here 07/10/10
T.BURKE arrives at Wicklow harbour , the BIM operated research vessel will be working along the Wicklow Coast over the next few weeks.The vessel for the national fisheries board (BIM) was launched around 2008. It was built in Kinsale, Co.Cork, by Fitzgerald Marine and has was named the 'T.Burke' after the late Dr.Tomas Burke, Aquaculture Technical Specialist with BIM who died in 2006. It is used for survey work around the coast and inshore surveying, particularly gathering information for use in developing the mussel industry. 05/10/10

An Air Corp 'CASA' maritime patrol aircraft transits South over Wicklow Bay , l assume she was monitoring the mussel trawlers working South of Wicklow head at the time.
The Air Corps currently operates two Casa CN 235 Maritime Patrol Aircraft. These aircraft entered service in 1994 and operate seven days a week usually in the off shore maritime patrol arena. For more details of the Irish Air Corp click here 30/09/10

As l walked around Wicklow Head on a sunny Wednesday morning , l spotted these birds gathering in large numbers , l wonder are they getting ready to leave our shores for warmer climates . If so Bon voyage ! and hopefully you will return safely next year.

PINNAU goes to anchor. The vessel was to laid down as ORTRUD MÜLLER in the 1990s at Kormaro , but was taken over by Erwin Strathlmann and completed as PINNAU in 2003.

Mussel trawlers work south of Wicklow Head 2/09/10 Work in progress on the South Quay. 2/09/10 Island Shippings ISLAND PARTNER arrived by road on Wednesday morning from the UK , the multipurpose vessel was assembled quicky after being lifted into the water. The vessel was built by MEERCAT Workboats and was delivered to the company earlier this year. Island Flyer leaves the port to work offshore.

Later in the evening the Irish Navel Service vessel LÉ AOIFE detained one of the mussel trawlers and escorted her into Arklow for a breach of fishing regulations. Thanks to Gordon Hunter on the tug SEA TROJAN for these fantastic photos of the former Irish Lights vessel 'GANNET' being towed from Dun Laoghaire to Chatham , on the Medway in Essex. The lightship will be sold for possible reconstruction. The tug cast off the tow at noon on Monday 8th March 2010 and the lightship was handed over at Chatham the following Saturday.
