A
notable part of the tour was to see equipment used by Navy divers and hear
the Officer in charge talk about the rigorous training process an
applicant endures before they qualify as a diver. l knew when the Executive
Officer said his name it sounded familiar, l have just read the
book Souls
of the Sea by Damien Tiernan , the
book is about 2 trawlers that sank in January 2007 off the South East
coast sadly with heavy loss of life. The PERE CHARLES sank near Hook Head
in Waterford and despite a
huge search
operation on the night none
of the crew were recovered . The vessel was later located on the seabed
and a Navel divers team under command of Lieutenant
Tony O'Regan carried out a complete search of the vessel in extreme and
dangerous conditions, no person was found in the vessel after a rigorous
Thank you to the crew of LÉ ORLA for the tour , the atmosphere onboard was very friendly and as members of the public we were made to feel very welcome. Skiff racing can be
traced back centuries in Wicklow and along the East Coast , it all began
when pilots would race out to meet incoming ships, the first skiff
crew to reach the ship had the right to pilot the vessel into the
port and the crew would receive payment.
‘Nookie’ Keogh
celebrates as Wicklow cross the line in first place
, the race had special significance for him as the Keogh family had
presented a Cup for the race in honour of their late father Vincent.
Nice to see Wicklow be the first club to win.
This year there was a
significant increase in the amount of people on the pier and along the
‘prom’ for the Regatta, maybe the recession had something to do with
it and many did not go overseas for holidays. But it was good to see so
many people watch and enjoy an event that is synonymous with Wicklow on
the August Bank holiday ‘the Regatta’. Long may it continue !
