Christmas Day at Wicklow harbour

Happy Christmas to the crew of SEA ENERGY. Even though they are far from home l expect their thoughts are of families and friends today. The Danes are no strangers to these waters and have arrived in longships in the distant past.

Darkness falls on Christmas day

The Danes bring some festive cheer to the port.

l left my phone on the capstan near the strand while taking these photo's . Thanks to the 2 people out walking who found it and returned it to me.

KARINA G was the last caller of the year arriving from Belfast to load out glass cullet for holland.

With preparation work complete SEA ENERGY leaves the harbour to go to anchor in the bay

View from the Greenhill carpark. SEA ENERGY left the bay shortly after lunch for the short trip south to the Arklow windfarm. She returned to Wicklow bay the next day after completing work on the wind turbine. The good new was she was to spend christmas in port.

The A2SEA work vessel SEA ENERGY arrives at Wicklow port to prepare for work on tuyrbines at the Arklow wind farm. The vessel is is a self-propelled crane vessel equipped with 4 jack-up legs of 32 meters enabling her to carry out offshore crane operations with great precision and control. The vessel is 91.76 meters long and 21.6 meters wide. She has a maximum deck load of 1.5 to 2 tons per square meter and 1020 sq.m. of free deck space and is able to operate in water depths up to 24 metres.

The combi 125 coaster BOUNDER arrives to load out scrap metal at the Packet pier on a cold Thursday morning.

SCOT MARINER arrives to unload a part cargo of timber , she departed a few hours later for Warrenpoint.

Wagenborg's REMSBORG went to Anchor in the early hours of Sunday morning after arriving from Foynes. She departes on Monday morning heading for the Welsh coast.

The tug MTS VICTORY tows the work platform NORDIC GIANT south off Wicklow harbour as the Minister for Transport Mr Leo Varadkar visited the harbour. From all reports the visit was positive and we can only hope the port will prosper in the future.

The small coaster TORRENT anchored in the bay on Wednesday afternoon as bad weather crossed the coast. She was built in 1992 at the Yorkshire dry dock Company in Hull. She resumed her passage South leaving the bay before midnight.

SCOT ISLES arrived to unload a part cargo of timber from Sweden, she is seen from Greenhill in nice afternoon sunshine. 

She sailed for Warrenpoint later the same evening.

The light tower on the lightship SKUA has been removed ! Any info on her future welcome.

TANJA departs after anchoring overnight on the short run south to load stone at Arklow Road jetty. She was built in 1989 at Cassens Werft in Emden.

AJOS G sails after loading a cargo of glass cullet for Holland. The vessel was built in 1996 by Slovenske Lodenice in Slovakia and was a regular caller in the past at Wicklow with timber cargoes.

Arklow shippings 'S' class coaster ARKLOW SAND approaches Wicklow harbour to effect repairs at the Packet pier.

She was built in 1998 by Barkmeijer Stroobos in the Netherlands

ARKLOW SAND departed later the same evening resuming her passage south.

CARRIER arrives in the harbour . She is one of many ships operated by Erwin Strahlmann. Built at the Husumer Dock at Husum in 1985. She is more familiar as the INGA a name she held up to 2002 , when she was a regular caller under Scotline charter bringing in cargoes of timber from Sweden.

Like most German ships she is registered in Antigua.

Balbriggan

Balbriggan harbour

The PORTISHAM at Balbriggan , She was one of a class of 93 Inshore minesweepers built for the Royal Navy between 1954 to 1959 and driven by twin shafts on Paxman Diesels. While serving with the RN she was armed with either one 40mm Bofors or one 200mm Oerlikon cannon. She could achieve 14 knots.  Portisham (M2781), which was built by the Dorset Yacht Company and completed in March 1956, served with the Royal Navy and Royal Naval Auxiliary Service. She was sold out of service in 1989. Any information regarding her present history welcome.
