RNLI Open day
2011
The Wicklow RNLI
Open day attracted a large crowd of spectators this year, the
day was filled with displays by the Fire and Ambulance services,
guided tours around the RNLI Station and its 2 lifeboats and
visits by the Air Corp and Coastguard helicopters in the
afternoon. The RNLI Station at Wicklow was established in 1857
and since that time local volunteers have been saving lives
along the Wicklow Coast , the charity relies on donations from
the public and the Open day is a way of thanking the public and
letting everyone see behind the scenes of a busy lifeboat
station.

The
Pacific Sandpiper was built and completed at Appledore in 1985.
The 103 metre vessel was specially designed for the
transportation of nuclear waste and was operated by Pacific
Nuclear Transport Limited. Her primary role was the safe
transportation of highly
radio active nuclear waste between the
UK and various ports around the globe.

The
Danish 31 metre tug NORSUND is operated by the Svenborg Towing Company, she
was built at a Dutch yard in 1971 as the RONNEBECK and took her present name
in 1997.

Pacific
Sandpiper is now bound for
Hansweert in Holland from its home port of Barrow for
deep cleaning, before going on to Belgium to be broken up. She
is the fifth PNTL Barrow-based nuclear waste carrier to be
scrapped in the last decade. Earlier this year she was
decommissioned and stripped of equipment at Barrow. According to
some reports 95 per cent of the ship will be recycled and one of
her lifeboats is to be donated to the Société Nationale de
Sauvetage en Mer (SNSM), France’s lifeboat service station in
Brehal, near Cherbourg,

'Whit bank
holiday Weekend'

The 'LASSIE of
CHESTER' was a nice visitor to the port over the bank holiday .
She is one of the Morecambe bay Prawn trawlers known as a 'Nobby' and was
built in 1937 at Conway in Wales
by the Conwy branch of the famous Crossfield family. 'Lassie' was built with
extra planking to her hull, possibly because the original owner was over 6ft
tall, but also because she was intended to fish the turbulent waters of the
Liverpool Bar. The extra height gives her more of a "Smack like"
appearance than most other Nobbies

Greystones
Harbour

Greystones
harbour development has come to a stand still and faces an
uncertain future

The hoarding
around the harbour has caused much annoyance to residents
, local represetitives are believed to be trying to reach a
compromise with the developers to see if a solution can be found
and the hoarding can come down.

The development
looks very impressive and hopefully it will see marine traffic
in the future.

The
STAVROS S NIARCHOS is a British brig-rigged sailing ship
operated by the Tall Ships Youth Trust. She is primarily
designed to provide young people with the opportunity to
undertake voyages as character-building exercises, rather than
pure sail-training. She is also used for adult voyages and
holidays, which help subsidise the operation of the ship. She
arrived in Wicklow Bay on Tuesday morning and
